onsists of aninner and an outer wall, forming an avenue that, prior to the insertion of thegreat east window, was continued round the extremity. The inner wall isseparated by piers into three compartments; each compartment containstwo low trefoil arches on the sides, and a high pointed arch in the centre,which is subdivided by a tall clustered column, branching off in the head,and forming two lesser arches. Each pier, which with the arches andarcades is Saxon*, is surmounted by two gothic pediments; and from 8 The application of the term Saxon to architecture admitted to be executed by the Normansis calculated to mislead the young and uninitiated reader.
