na horizontal position, and which can be inserted by depress-ing the bookholder from below or by opening the door in theside of the dark chamber. The light is reflected directly fromthe opaque object into a mirror placed above it at an angleof 45° and thence thru the lens to the screen. There isno inversion or transposition of the opaque object in usingthis type of instrument, and the horizontal position of thebookholder permits the use of aquaria, biological specimensand other objects up to 6J/2 square which could not be usedin the old form of vertical object holder. There is, of course, a slight loss of light, due to the use ofthe mirror, but it is so slight that the advantages of this typeof instrument more than make it up. For vertical projection, this instrument is used just thesame as in the case of lantern slide projection, except that thevertical attachment is placed above a reflecting mirror in theupper light chamber. 32 Mcintosh stereopticon company, Chicago, ill., u. s. a.

(Fig. 2) An immediate change is made possible by mounting themirror so that it is hinged at one end and can be immediatelydropped to an angle of 45° to the horizontal beam of light,which is reflected up through the lenses and thence forwardto the screen. For microscope projection the light is projected straightforward as for lantern slides. The cooling tank is mounteddirectly in front of the slide stage, the objective is swung overout of the optical line, the miscroscope attachment is swungup and clamped in position by the thumb screw which entersa long V groove wdiich keeps it rigidly in optical line. For microscope projection, wherever possible, we recom-mend the use of 5/16 carbons, rather than the larger size.These small carbons can be used in the arc lamp of the Alulti-opticon, but if it seems more convenient, the regular largecarbons can be used with exceedingly satisfactory results.
