English: Castletown Square Centre. of the photograph is the Smelt Monument erected in memory of Lieutenant Govenor Colonel Cornelius Smelt who died in 1832. Behind is the former St Mary's Church which was initially the Garrison church. This was declared unsafe and closed in 1977. It has since been restored and continues as an office. To the right are some fine Georgian houses which have recently been renovated. The tallest, Balcony House, was once the residence of Captain Quilliam who served on H.M.S. Victory at the Battle of Trafalgar. |
