Itwas done with the sixteenth century fountainof the Medicis in the Luxembourg Gardens(whose sculptures according to the original de-signs were only completed in 1839), but this isperhaps the only instance of a great mediaevalchateau being thus carried to completion. Therestorations of Carcassonne, Saint-Michel andPierrefonds are in quite another category. The Chateau La Rochepot was a develop-ment of the ancient Chastel-Rocca, which stoodon the same site in the twelfth century, andwhich drew its name originally from its situa-tion. Elpinac, just to the west of La Rochepot, is inthe heart of a veritable black country ; notthe black country of the Midlands in Eng-land, but a more picturesque region, where the

In addition to drawing its fame fromthe mines roundabout, Epinac owes not a littleof its distinction to its chateau, and a neigh-bouring Chateau de Sully which dates from thesixteenth century. The Chateau de Sully is a magnificent edificebuilt in 1567 for the Marechal de Saulx-Tavannes, and is to-day classed by the Frenchgovernment as a monument historique. Itwas built from the plans of Ribbonnier, a cele-brated architect of Langres in the sixteenthcentury, and terminated only in the reign ofHenri IV. It is an excellent type of the FrenchRenaissance of the latter half of the sixteenthcentury. In form it is a vast rectangle withsquare pavilions, or towers, at each angle setdiagonally.
