Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Castle Hill, Bransholme, Wawne, East Riding of Yorkshire, England.
Looking towards the earthworks from Castlehill Bridge where Castlehill Road crosses Holderness Drain. The motte at Bransholme (sometimes Brancholme) is thought to be the remains of a 12th century fortified manor house or timber castle. In 1353 John de Sutton was fined for "crenellating without Licence" here, and the brick foundations of a later (probably 17th century) house were uncovered on the site in 1918. The motte is described by some sources as "much destroyed by misuse" and a "shapeless earthwork with ditch" and the Ordnance Survey map of 1855 shows an "old sand pit" in the middle of the mound. At present the brick arched Castlehill Bridge is also in a poor state of repair with the west side parapet almost completely missing.
