Summary[edit]

Description
English: Castle Hill, Bransholme, Wawne, East Riding of Yorkshire, England.
The former Hornsea Branch Railway: aerial 2018.
See also TA1234 : Castle Hill, Bransholme and former Hornsea Branch Railway: aerial 2018 (2).

Disused railway is now part of Trans-Pennine Trail.
The motte at Bransholme (sometimes Brancholme) is thought to be the remains of a 12th century fortified manor house or timber castle. In 1353 John de Sutton was fined for "crenellating without Licence" here, and the brick foundations of a later (probably 17th century) house were uncovered on the site in 1918. The motte is described by some sources as "much destroyed by misuse" and a "shapeless earthwork with ditch". With thanks to Paul Glazzard Link for this information - see TA1234 : Castle Hill, Bransholme.
