Deutsch: Castel Gandolfo, oder lateinisch Castrum Gandulphi liegt in den Albaner Bergen etwa 25 Km südöstlich von Rom am Albaner See. Hier, wo sich jetzt die Kleinstadt an einem ehemaligen Vulkankrater befindet lag die sagenumwobenen Stadt Alba Longa. Diese Stadt wurde etwa 1152 v. Chr von Ascanius, ein Sohn des Trojaners Aeneas gegründet. Die beiden Stadtgründer von Rom Romulus und Remus waren die Söhne der Rhea Silvia, einer Tochter des Alba Longa Königs Numitor Silvius. Der dritte König Roms, Tullus Hostilius hat die Stadt 665 v. Chr. zerstört, die Bewohner verschleppt und auf dem Mons Caelius, einer der sieben Hügel Roms angesiedelt. Das Patriziergeschlecht der Julier, von dem Cäsar abstammte kam ursprünglich aus Alba Longa. Heute ist Castel Gandolfo der Sommersitz der Päpste.
English: Castel Gandolfo, or Latin Castrum Gandulphi located in the Alban Hills about 25 km southeast of Rome on the Alban Lake. Here, where now the town is located on a former volcanic crater was the fabled city of Alba Longa. This city was founded around 1152 BC by Ascanius, the son of the Trojan Aeneas. The two founders of the city of Rome, Romulus and Remus were the sons of Rhea Silvia, daughter of the king Numitor Silvius from Alba Longa.
