Description |
English: Cast copper alloy trapezoidal buckle frame with an incomplete separate copper alloy hinged plate. Medieval, probably fourteenth century (AD 1300 – AD 1400). Length 41mm, maximum width of buckle frame 20mm, maximum thickness of buckle frame 1.2mm. Weight 4.72g. The frame is 16mm in length, 20mm in width and 1.2mm thick. The outside edge of the frame is sub-circular in cross-section and is enclosed by a copper alloy sheet roller. The sides of the frame are slightly convex when viewed in plan and they are D-shaped in cross-section, flat on the inner sides. The bar is sub-circular in cross-section, about 1mm in diameter. The sub-rectangular copper alloy sheet plate is hinged around the bar. The shorter side of the plate is parallel to the bar and the front and rear plates are of different dimensions. The front plate is 26mm x 17mm and has an old break at the attachment end. The rear plate is smaller, 23mm x 14mm. The attachment end of this plate also has an old break. The hinged plate is recessed for the frame and has a circular pin hole which is 2mm in diameter. The copper alloy wire pin is bent and tapers to form a blunt tip. The hinged plate has been repaired by means of two small rivet holes which penetrate both plates and are close to and parallel to the attachment end. Fine copper alloy wire has been threaded through the holes three times and secured with a half-hitch to form a binding in order to secure a strap or girdle. This wire binding survives only at the front. However, a mark on the rear face of the plate indicates its former presence. The piece is in fair condition and has a shiny mid-green patina and “scratch” marks on the front and rear plates are similarly patinated. |
