Title
Cast copper alloy Roman dolphin brooch with enamel inlay
Description
English: Fragment of a copper alloy Colchester derivative, Polden Hill brooch, c. f. Mackreth 2011, Chapter 3, Part 3. Group 4a or 4b, dating AD75-175. The spring is contained within a cylinder with a slot for the pin; the ends are closed. The head of the brooch rises up from the wings and tapers downwards the foot forming the bow of the object. The head is decorated with a pair of parallel grooves, around the ends of the wings. On either side of the head is a circular cell flanked by two triangular cells, all intended to carry enamel. The circular cells are now blank but the triangular ones contain pale blue enamel. The bow tapers and is broken. The pin and catchplate are missing. The object has a dark green patina.
