Summary[edit]
DescriptionCassis flammea (flame helmet snail) (San Salvador Island, Bahamas) 1 (15520814434).jpg |
Cassis flammea (Linnaeus, 1758) - flame helmet snail on shallow subtidal, aragonite sandy estuarine seafloor. (photo taken by Scott Bair) Gastropods are slug-like molluscs. They occur in marine, freshwater, and terrestrial environments. Many of them (snails) make a calcareous, coiled, external shell, which is used for protection from predators. Helmet snails are predatory - they feed on regular & irregular echinoids (sea urchins & sand dollars). They are usually infaunal during daylight and are epifaunal while feeding at night-time. Classification: Animalia, Mollusca, Gastropoda, Cassidae Locality: South Pigeon Creek estuary, southeastern San Salvador Island, eastern Bahamas |
