  • Dansk: Maleriet er tilsyneladende det første billede af et skibbrud, Friedrich har malet. Siden vendte han flere gange tilbage til dette tema. Han har sandsynligvis gjort studier til maleriet ved Rügens kyster (jf. Zschoche, Caspar David Friedrich auf Rügen, 1998, p. 136). Et konkret tegnet forlæg synes ikke bevaret, men han har ved flere lejligheder tegnet flere sten i vandkanten (jf. Christina Grummt, Caspar David Friedrich. Die Zeichnungen. München 2011, bd. 1 & 2, nr. 311, 446, 820, 821, 822). Motivet er nært beslægtet med J.C. Dahls 'Søstykke med vrag' (version i Bergen (udateret) og i SMK fra 1831 (KMS7599)). Maleriet foregriber hovedværket 'Ishavet' fra 1824 (Hamburger Kunsthalle).

  • Dansk: Formodentlig erhvervet direkte fra kunstneren af familien Bongardt, Dresden (familiesegl på bagsiden af blændrammen). Nedarvet i familien. Ingeborg Graefe-Bongardt, Wiesbaden til 1956. Købt af Fritz Busche, Dortmund; i arv til dennes datter, Salt Lake City. Galerie Arnoldi-Livie fra 1987 (deponeret i Neue Pinakothek 1990-2015). Gave 15. december 2016 til SMK fra Augustinus Fonden, Aage og Johanne Louis-Hansens Fond og A. P. Møller og Hustru Chastine Mc-Kinney Møllers Fond til almene Formaal.
