Title
English: Carriages outside gold rush outfitters, ca. 1898
Description
English: After news of gold strikes in the Klondike region reached Seattle in 1897, many of the city's stores became outfitters for would-be gold seekers. New companies opened as well. The 1898 Seattle city directory lists one sled manufacturer and 25 outfitting and supply companies.

In this photo, two delivery carts wait outside gold rush outfitters on First Avenue near Madison Street in downtown Seattle. They will carry goods to the waterfront to be loaded onto ships heading north to the Alaskan ports that served the Klondike gold fields.

  • Subjects (LCTGM): Gold rushes; Horse teams; Prospecting equipment & supplies; Yukon Supply Co.
