Title
Caroline Polyxene, Landgravine of Hesse-Cassel-Rumpenheim (1762-1821)
Description
English: Portrait of Caroline of Nassau-Usingen (1762-1823), wife of Prince Friedrich of Hesse-Kassel (1747-1837)

"Oval gold locket containing a miniature of Caroline Polyxene, Landgravine of Hesse-Cassel-Rumpenheim. The front of the locket with the cipher CP surrounded by forget-me-nots, the back, miniature of a marble cenotaph with with the words 'A Mon Amie' in gold, enclosed in a pale blue enamel rim with the inscirption '**NOTRE * LIAISON * FAIT * MON * BONHEUR **' The miniature inside is bust-length, facing half to the right; wearing a low-cut white dress; dark blue eyes, long powdered hair; dark grey background.

The sitter appears to be in her early twenties, but the miniature is presumably a memorial copy of an engagement or marriage portrait, commissioned by her husband at her death in 1821. He survived her by sixteen years.

Eldest daughter of Charles William, Prince of Nassau-Usingen. She married Frederick, Landgrave of Hesse-Cassel-Rumpenheim in 1786."
