Summary[edit]
DescriptionCarman Hill-fort, inner east wall of outer enclosure - geograph.org.uk - 1348640.jpg |
English: Carman Hill-fort: inner east wall of outer enclosure This is the sixth in a series of ten linked items showing the structure of an ancient hill-fort on Carman Hill (for an in-depth discussion of its history, see 697526).
The outer enclosure of the hill-fort is mostly enclosed by a single wall. However, on the eastern side, the outer enclosure has a double wall. These two walls run almost parallel to each other, and are particularly well-preserved. The northern half of the innermost (i.e. western) wall of the pair is shown here, represented by a very prominent line of boulders. The following annotated satellite view shows the line of the wall; the photo was taken from the position indicated by the yellow marker, looking south-east: http://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&msa=0&ll=55.980642,-4.611361&spn=0.002635,0.006523&t=h&z=18&msid=111659464483026017583.00046c0116f689b154fa1 Only part of the wall is shown here, since its next section lies over the brow of the hill; however, the next item in this series takes up the course of that wall from the point at which it drops out of sight here. Carman Reservoir can be seen in the background, left of centre, and Dumbarton Rock can be seen just right of centre on the near shore of the River Clyde. Previous: 1348635. Next: 1348667. |
