L'età apparente di Vittorio Amedeo giovinetto (1666-1732) e la presenza del duca Carlo Emanuele (1634-1675) lasciano supporre una data non lontana dal 1675 per questo dipinto, che aderisce alla tradizione retorica di corte che identifica nel ritratto equestre la forma più alta di rappresentazione della regalità e ha come immediati precedenti il ciclo eroico-venatorio realizzato da Dauphin per la Reggia di Diana alla Venaria Reale. Il dipinto è un pendant del ritratto equestre di Maria Giovanna Battista di Savoia-Nemours (rispettivamente moglie e madre dei due cavalieri ritratti da Brambilla) attribuito al pittore torinese Giovanni Luigi Buffi (767/D). L'esecuzione dell'opera si può attribuire a Giovanni Battista Brambilla, allievo di Dauphin, che aveva fornito i disegni dei dieci ritratti della Venaria incisi da Tasnière e destinati a illustrare il libro di Amedeo di Castellamonte sulla Reggia. Il dipinto si differenzia dalle opere del maestro per una maggiore rigidità formale. Il costume all'antica del sovrano e la vistosa marchiatura del cavallo ducale in forma di L laureata e coronata richiama il modello del celebre ritratto equestre di Luigi XIV di Francia eseguito da Pierre Mignard, oggi conservato a Versailles. L'acquisto nel 1726 di una replica del ritratto è una prova significativa della fortuna iconografica del dipinto alla corte sabauda.
