Description
Deutsch: Denkmal für Carl Benz (1844–1929) auf dem Alten Messegelände, vor dem Verkehrszentrum des Deutschen Museums, München-Schwanthalerhöhe.
Das von dem Bildhauer Rolf Nida-Rümelin (1910–1996) gestaltete Denkmal wurde 1958 im Zusammenhang mit dem Jubiläum „800 Jahre Münchner Verkehr“ und der „Carl-Benz-Gedächtnis-Rallye“ am Oskar-von-Miller-Ring aufgestellt. Nachdem es dort dem Neubau einer Konzernzentrale weichen musste, steht es seit 2016 am neuen Standort.
Das pfeilerförmige Monument trägt an der Vorderseite die Reliefdarstellung der Rundfahrt von Carl und Bertha Benz(?) durch München, wahrscheinlich in Anlehnung an die Zeichnung von G. Franz (in: Illustrirte Zeitung vom 1. Dezember 1888, S. 574, siehe Abbildung 1, Abbildung 2). Die Inschrift darunter nennt das Datum des Ereignisses:

Wie aus der untenstehenden Abbildung, welche einen solchen Wagen mit bequemem Sitz für vier Personen, abnehmbarem Halbverdeck und Spritzleder zeigt, zu sehen ist, hat die neue Construction eine gefällige, im Aussehen den gebräuchlichen Fuhrwerken ähnliche Form erhalten. (...) Wie die häufigen Rundfahrten eines solchen Wagens durch die Straßen Münchens zur Zeit der Ausstellung bewiesen haben, ist diese Construction geeignet, in vielen Fällen die kostspielige Zugkraft der Pferde vortheilhaft zu ersetzen.“
