Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Canal moorings at Shardlow, Derbyshire. Telephoto view looking north-east from Idle Bridge (No 3). Shardlow was a busy river port before the Trent and Mersey Canal was authorised in 1766, and construction started in that year under the supervision of James Brindley. The route from Derwent Mouth (a mile from here) to the Bridgewater Canal near Manchester allowed passage via Runcorn to the River Mersey, and was fully open by 1777. The section through Shardlow was open and in operation by 1770.
