English: In the 1910s, before the days of superhighways, it was very hard to drive an automobile through Snoqualmie Pass in the Cascade Mountains. The Sunset Highway, dedicated in 1915, was a rough gravel road, and cars had to stop often for gasoline and repairs. Roadside inns and resorts catered to travelers about every ten miles along the route. These provided food, gasoline and a place to stay overnight or longer. This photo, taken on a wintery day sometime around 1925, shows Camp Mason, about ten miles west of Snoqualmie Pass. At Camp Mason, named for its second owner, tourists could buy a meal, get groceries, gas up their cars or spend the night. The Sunset Highway is now Interstate 90, and the old camp is the site of a highway maintenance shop. Written on negative: Camp Mason
