Orchids Calypso bulbosa

Summary[edit]

Description

Calypso height 5-18 cm, the flowers have a delicate fragrance of vanilla. The generic name Calypso bulbous was named after Calypso - the heroine of Homer's work "The Odyssey". Calypso was a beautiful nymph on the island of Aegis, where Odysseus was taken after a shipwreck, and where he spent the whole seven years next to the beautiful Calypso. Species name - bulbous - orchid received because of the presence of its underground organ, similar to a small bulb. In some countries, Calypso is called "Fairy Slipper", which means "fairy slipper".

Calypso was found in the Omsk region in 2009 by Novosibirsk botanists. In 2020 and 2021, Omsk botanists led by A.I. Mikhaltsov implemented an environmental project "In Search of Calypso" and found the second and third populations of this rare orchid.
