Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Milne Ice Shelf is located in the Qikiqtaaluk Region, Nunavut, Canada. It is the second largest ice shelf in the Arctic Ocean. As shown in this Copernicus Sentinel-1 image acquired on 1 August 2020, a very large section of the Milne Ice Shelf has collapsed into the Arctic Ocean creating an ice island with a area of about 79 km2 (almost half the size of Liechtenstein). As reported by the Canadian Ice Service, causes of the collapse are linked to climate change (hot air temperature, strong offshore winds and absence of seaice). RADAR data obtained by the Copernicus Sentinel-1 satellites are not affected by the presence of clouds, or by polar seasonal long nights. They are therefore particularly useful for monitoring drifting icebergs or ice and glaciers.
