Summary[edit]
DescriptionCabmen's Shelters London (25858473287).jpg |
The cabmen’s shelters were established in 1875, at a time when the drivers’ vehicles were horse-drawn carriages called hansom cabs. Sixty-one were built across London up to 1914, to provide shelter, hot food and non-alcoholic drinks to cab drivers LeftThis shelter is located at Temple Place Near Temple station is currently out of service and awaiting restoration... It is slightly different in design to the other two images. You can see the hatch where the public are allowed to purchase drinks Etc... Middle This shed is by Embankment place just south of Trafalgar Square next to Embankment station This one was working and open when i took this photo. RightThe Cabmen's Shelter in Grosvenor Gardens in Belgravia, London was built in 1906 for cabbies waiting at the ranks, and is one of two sites in the capital to be granted protected status. Today, only 12 working shelters remain. The 12 that remain – only allow cab drivers inside, although they offer reasonably-priced food and drink to the public through a window. The sign says it's open between 7am -3pm written in chalk so i guess that is easily changed.. When they were first built, cab drivers were legally required to stay with their carriages, which made it hard for them to find shelter or food except in local pubs. As a result, they were tempted to drink alcohol on the job. When the 7th Earl of Shaftesbury wasn’t able to find a sober driver to take him home, he set up the Cabmen’s Shelter Fund (the Monogram CSF can be still seen on the top of the green part of the shelters). In the 20th Century, many of the shelters fell victim to bombing during World War Two, while others shut due to road widening. But most closed as the result of taxis changing from horse-powered to motor vehicles – meaning they weren’t as limited in range and had other options for food and drink. Information found and edited from various sources... As a photograph this doesn't really work very well with the three images due to the symmetry so i will look for some more shelters and try to improve it's look next time.. |
