English: Toba-Batak men with pigs on the way to the market in Tarutung, Sumatra
Nederlands: Stereonegatief. Net als schapen en geiten vonden de meeste Europese reizigers varkens niet exotisch genoeg om er veel aandacht aan te besteden. Toch moeten Indonesiërs die met varkens rondliepen in het westen van de Archipel een vrij bijzonder gezicht geweest zijn. De grote meerderheid van de bevolking van Java en Sumatra was moslim en omdat de islam het varken als een onrein dier beschouwt, probeerde de lokale bevolking deze dieren zo veel mogelijk te mijden. De teelt van varkens was op Java grotendeels in handen van Chinezen, maar op Sumatra gold dit ook voor de 'heidense' en christelijke Bataks. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
