Nederlands: Negatief. Sedert de vroege 17e eeuw had de VOC als hoogste vertegenwoordiger in de Indische Archipel een Gouverneur-Generaal aangewezen, die vanaf 1619 te Batavia resideerde. In de 19e eeuw werd zijn officiële residentie het paleis te Buitenzorg, aanvankelijk alleen bedoeld als zomerverblijf. De eerste Gouverneur-Generaal was Pieter Both (1609-1614), de laatste H.J. van Mook (officieel slechts Luitenant-Gouverneur-Generaal). De bekendste GGs waren Jan Pieterszoon Coen (1618-1623, 1627-1629), Herman Willem Daendels (1808-1811), de Engelsman Thomas Stamford Raffles (1811-1816; slechts Luitenant-Gouverneur), Johannes van den Bosch (1830-1833) en J.B. van Heutsz (1904-1909).
