Nederlands: Foto. Zelfs bij een kort bezoek aan Indië kon het niemand ontgaan dat vooral op Java de rijkdom aan vruchten enorm was. Veel dorpelingen hadden een paar vruchtenbomen in hun tuin waarvan de vruchten meestal naar de markt gebracht werden. Vruchten maakten doorgaans geen onderdeel uit van het normale dagelijkse voedingspatroon, wellicht met uitzondering van bananen. Vruchten waren een luxe die men zich niet kon veroorloven. Daarnaast hadden zowel de Javanen als de daar verblijvende Europeanen andere opvattingen dan de huidige over hoe gezond het was om vruchten te eten. De ontdekking van vitamines en van de rol die ze bij de gezondheid spelen, dateert ten slotte van na 1900. (P. Boomgaard, 2001). Stilleven met verschillende tropische vruchten. |
