Nederlands: Pater Martien Gloudemans (links) met een rustende medepassagier aan boord van de Prins der Nederlanden, op weg naar Nederlands-Indië in 1929. Martien Gloudemans (1904-1979) werd in 1928 tot priester gewijd. Amper een jaar later stuurde zijn congregatie, die van de Missionarissen van de Heilige Familie (MSF), hem naar Borneo, waar hij tussen 1934 en 1938 als missionaris vier grote reizen maakte. Te voet en per prauw doorkruiste hij een gebied zo groot als Frankrijk, dat destijds voor het merendeel bedekt was met tropisch regenwoud. Voor al deze reizen had hij dienstopdrachten meegekregen die varieerden van het zoeken naar nieuwe en vooral betere verbindingswegen tot het visiteren en inspecteren van de missiestaties. Na een tiental tropenjaren in onder meer Laham en Banjarmasin, vertrok Gloudemans in 1939 als Tuan Glou naar Nederland, om vanaf 1946 weer aan de slag te gaan in Balikpapan. De reizen van Martien Gloudemans zijn niet onopgemerkt gebleven. Reisverslagen van zijn hand werden gepubliceerd in de Koerier, het Soerabaiasch Handelsblad en het Koloniaal Missie Tijdschrift. In 1962 verscheen er bij uitgeverij Zwijsen (Tilburg) een door Chr. Van Loon geschreven jeugdboek getiteld Tuan Glou, dat verhaalt van de avontuurlijke tocht van Samarinda naar Pontianak (en terug). Het geïllustreerde boek verscheen in 1963 ook in Duitsland met de titel "Tuan Glou, Erlebnisse eines Borneo-Missionars". Volkskrant-journalist Cees Gloudemans schreef het boek Dwars door Borneo (Atlas, 1997), een verslag van zijn eigen reizen door Kalimantan waar hij het spoor van zijn oom probeerde terug te volgen. De rustende medepassagier op deze foto is de heer Kerstholt, lid van de Volksraad in Batavia. |
