English: The house of the Prince of Goa in Makassar, Sulawesi.
Nederlands: foto. In het rijk Makassar waren de vorsten van Goa (ook wel gespeld als Gowa) en Tallo samengegaan, waarmee Makassar tot 1667 de machtigste staat was in de 'zuidwesterarm' van Celebes. In dat jaar sloten de Boeginezen van het vorstendom Bone een verdrag (van Bongaja) met de VOC tegen Makassar. Dit werd toen door het bondgenootschap verslagen en het fort Ujung Pandang (tot voor kort onder de Republiek Indonesië de naam voor Makassar) kwam in handen van de VOC en werd later omgedoopt tot Fort Rotterdam. Het paleis op de foto, typerend voor de Makassaarse bouwstijl, dateert van de 19e eeuw. Na de val van Makassar werd dit een belangrijke VOC vestiging, terwijl Bone de belangrijkste inheemse staat in het gebied werd. (P. Boomgaard, 2001). Paleis van de vorsten van Goa |
