Java mag dan sinds de zestiende eeuw grotendeels islamitisch zijn, veel belangrijke gebeurtenissen waren nog in de twintigste eeuw omgeven door rituelen die van voor de komst van de islam dateren. Dit geldt voor alles wat met de landbouw te maken heeft en voor de levenscyclus van de mens (geboorte, besnijdenis, huwelijk, dood).
