Nederlands: Het Makishi masker werd volgens Baumann (1935) bij de Chokwe alleen gebruikt in verband met de initiatierituelen voor jonge jongens die plaats vonden in het besnijdeniskamp. Reeds in circa 1880 werd het gebruikt bij meer profane gelegenheden. Nog altijd is er een strikt onderscheid tussen 'amusements' maskers en de eigenlijke, voor vrouwen bijzonder streng geheim gehouden besnijdenismaskers.
In de eerste paar dagen werd door de maskerdrager de jongens in het besnijdeniskamp schrik aangejaagd. Daar legde hij het masker en pak in het bijzijn van de jongens af, en wisten de jongens dat hij geen gestorven familielid, maar een gewone dorpsgenoot was. Akishi betekent immers 'gestorven familieleden', maar ook 'maskerdrager'. Van nu af konden ze ook zelf maskerpakken dragen en vrouwen en kinderen schrik aanjagen. Ieder die besneden is kan een masker (laten) maken, maar hij is wel verplicht het Makishi-masker te maken dat in zijn familie gebruikelijk is. Hij noemt zelf de naam van de voorouder die hij voorstelt. Dit Makishi-masker behoort tot de Cizaluke of Tsizaluke maskers die een krankzinnige of nar voorstellen. White (1951) meldt dat de drie knobbels op de schedel wijzen op het feit dat het masker een oude dorpschief voorstelt. Vroeger werd dit masker voor het gezicht gedragen. In de jaren 70 van de twintigste eeuw werd het reeds op het voorhoofd gedragen, misschien om de 'Akishi' minder te belemmeren in de bewegingen van zijn hoofd. |
