Nederlands: Foto. Rond 1900 verschijnen er beschouwingen over de 'teloorgang' (het verloren gaan dus) van inheemse ambachten. Enige tijd later beginnen ondernemers en ambtenaren zich ook zorgen te maken over scholing die te veel op de hersens gericht is en te weinig op de handen. Daardoor zou de industrie straks geen geschikte werkkrachten kunnen vinden. Dit waren nieuwe geluiden, omdat de beleidsmakers in de 19e eeuw altijd een voor hen vanzelfsprekende tweedeling hadden gehanteerd: Europa maakte industrieproducten, de bevolking van Indië bestond uit boeren. Met de zogeheten Ethische Politiek kreeg men ook oog voor scholing op meer ambachtelijk terrein. De Eerste Wereldoorlog had laten zien hoe kwetsbaar Indië was op het gebied van nijverheidsproducten als de handel met Europa wegviel. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
