| Description |
Nederlands: Negatief. Koffie is een gewas dat oorspronkelijk niet in de Indische Archipel groeide. De VOC heeft het omstreeks 1700 op Java ingevoerd. Na 1830 werd koffie, met groot succes, onder het Cultuurstelsel geteeld onder toezicht van Nederlandse ondernemers. Koffie werd overigens ook door Javaanse boeren op kleine schaal aangeplant. Na 1870 werd het in etappes als dwangcultuur afgeschaft. Vooral in Oost-Java werd koffie toen op erfpachtpercelen door Westerse ondernemers aangeplant, omdat deze doorgaans bergachtige en nog beboste gebieden als goede koffiegronden beschouwd werden. Daarnaast bleef de bevolkingskoffie bestaan. Zoals op de foto ook te zien valt werd koffie vaak onder schaduwbomen geplant. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
