Nederlands: De staf heeft een knop in de vorm van een mensenhoofd. De gehele staf is versierd met ingebrande lijnen en punten. Ook het hoofd is zo versierd, langs de onderkant van de wangen en over de kin lopen een rij streepjes als baard. De lijnen op het achterhoofd stellen een tatoeage of haar voor. Waarschijnlijk een wandelstok.
Veel figuratieve en non-figuratieve knotsen en staven werden door heel Zuidoost-Afrika in de 19de en vroeg 20ste eeuw vervaardigd door Tsonga houtsnijders, waarvan bekend is dat ze het Zulu koninkrijk van staven voorzag als belasting/tribuut aan Shaka en zijn opvolgers. Figuratieve staven zijn daarna ook gemaakt voor toeristen. Staven met prominente genitaliën werden vermoedelijk gemaakt voor initiaties. Staven werden dus vervaardigd voor een aantal soorten markten, hoewel de meeste duidelijk gebruikt werden door hoofdmannen (Phillips, 1996:209). Onderhavig exemplaar is echter vermoedelijk toch een staf voor de toeristenmarkt. |
