Nederlands: Het hoofd is onderdeel van een beeld geweest, mogelijk een zogenaamd spijkerbeeld of krachtbeeld. Het zou de geest van een dergelijke 'nkisi nkondi' zijn. De verzamelaar heeft het hoofd van de rest van het beeld afgehakt, zoals men vroeger ook deed bij antieke Italiaanse beelden. het hoofd bevatte ooit een medicijn en de ogen bestonden vermoedelijk uit glas op een rode textiele ondergrond. Er waren verschillende redenen om een nkisi weg te doen, zoals wanneer de eigenaar dacht dat het beeld niet meer werkte, of als hij tot het Christendom was bekeerd. Een nkisi kon worden aangeroepen door het inslaan van spijkers, het te beledigen, het te vergelijken met een stuk hout of het te dreigen weg te gooien (Phillips, 1996:246) |
