English: The house in which Rumphius lived
Nederlands: Repronegatief. Aan het begin van alle kennis van de natuur in Indië staat de naturalist Georg Everhard Rumf (1628-1702) uit het Duitse Hanau die, zoals de geleerden van die tijd nu eenmaal deden, zijn naam verlatijnste tot Rumphius. In 1652 trad hij in dienst van de VOC. Al in 1653 werd hij op Ambon gestationeerd waar hij in 1662 de rang van 'koopman' bereikte. Rond die tijd begon hij ook met de studie van Ambons flora en fauna. In 1670 werd hij blind. Toch zette hij zijn werk voort, wat hem bij het nageslacht de bijnaam 'de blinde ziener van Ambon' heeft opgeleverd. Zo beschikken we nu over diverse boeken van zijn hand.
