English: Museum Kedaton, the former palace of the sultan of Ternate
Nederlands: Repronegatief. Tegenwoordig onderscheidt men de Noord-Molukken (Ternate, Tidore, Batjan, Halmahera), de Midden-Molukken (Ambon, Boeroe, Ceram en de Banda Eilanden) en de Zuid- of Zuidoost-Molukken (o.m. Wetar, Leti, Damar, Babar, Tanimbar, Kei en Aroe, in de koloniale periode als Zuidwester en Zuidooster Eilanden aangeduid). Vóór de 17e eeuw betekende Molukken eigenlijk alleen Noord-Molukken. Het woord Molukken is vermoedelijk een verbastering van een Arabisch woord dat gebied van veel koningen betekent. Inderdaad waren er rond 1500 verschillende vorsten op deze eilanden gevestigd. Aanvankelijk hadden de Portugezen, Spanjaarden en Nederlanders vooral belangstelling voor de Sultans van Ternate. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
