Nederlands: foto. Deze foto is gemaakt tijdens de Commissiereis naar Centraal-Borneo van A. W. Nieuwenhuis. Onder veel volken van de Archipel was het de gewoonte om het menselijk lichaam op diverse punten blijvend te bewerken. Het veilen van tanden en het doorboren en uitrekken van oorlelletjes zijn daar voorbeelden van. Een ander voorbeeld is tatoeage. Bij de Kajans (foto) werden alle vrouwen uitvoerig getatoeëerd op hun handen, armen, dijen en voeten. Dit was een langdurig proces dat begon in hun vroege tienerjaren en dat zelden voltooid was voor ze een paar kinderen hadden. Elke stand had zijn eigen motieven. Den Kajans (foto), blev alle kvinder udførligt tatoveret på deres hænder, arme, lår og fødder. Det var en lang proces, der begyndte i deres tidlige teenageår, og var sjældent afsluttet, før de havde et par børn. Hver enkelt stat havde sine egne motiver. Mænd var normalt tatoveret. (P.
