Nederlands: Foto. Bestuurlijk viel het eiland Celebes met de omringende eilanden (onder meer Sangir & Talaud Eilanden, Banggai Eilanden, Boeton, Moena, Salajar) na 1908 in twee delen uiteen. Het noordelijke deel was de Residentie Manado (of Menado), het zuidelijke was het Gouvernement Celebes en Onderhorigheden. Historisch gezien valt het eiland in drie delen uiteen. Het noordelijkste deel, de Minahasa (hoofdplaats Manado), was al vroeg gekerstend en de VOC had er vanaf 1656 veel invloed. Het zuidwestelijke deel, met als belangrijkste stad Makassar, was dicht bevolkt en bestond al vroeg uit een aantal rijkjes die elkaar fel beoorloogden. Het gebied tussen beide uitersten was dun bevolkt en vóór 1900 was er weinig contact met het koloniaal bestuur. (P. Boomgaard, 2001). Familie met huispersoneel voor het residentiehuis in Menado |
