In de 18de eeuw bestond de bevolking van Batavia voor meer dan 60% uit slaven. Om problemen te voorkomen waren er nooit Javaanse slaven, maar werden er mensen aangevoerd uit andere gebieden, zoals het vasteland van Zuid-Azie (India en Birma), en later de Indonesische eilanden Bali en Celebes. Zij hadden meestal huishoudelijke taken. De arbeids- en leefomstandigheden waren over het algemeen redelijk. Er waren wetten die hen beschermden tegen een al te wreed optreden van hun meesters. Christelijke slaven kregen na de dood van hun meester de vrijheid. Sommige slaven mochten ook met een eigen ambacht of winkel geld verdienen om zich vrij te kopen.
