Nederlands: Foto. Wie over land een flinke afstand moest afleggen in de tijd voor de komst van de trein en de auto had daarbij altijd paarden nodig. Ambtenaren, zoals controleurs, gingen te paard op tournee. Particuliere reizigers huurden doorgaans een rijtuig met paarden. Die moesten echter regelmatig 'verwisseld' worden, dat wil zeggen dat men 'verse' paarden kreeg tegen inlevering van de vermoeide dieren. Dat gebeurde bij paardenposterijen of paardenwisselstations, die op regelmatige afstanden te vinden waren, althans langs de zogeheten Grote Postweg, aangelegd op initiatief van Gouverneur-Generaal Daendels.
