Nederlands: Negatief. (P. Boomgaard, 2001). English: Negative. The women of the Toba and Karo-Bataks wore jewelry, a custom supported by a strong local tradition of gold and silversmiths. These, of course, were in turn maintained by wearing a lot of finery. This had the double function of showing wealth and saving income that did not have to be spent immediately. When it came to family heirlooms, wearing them was also supposed to protect the wearer and bring good luck. A Karo woman who got married took off all jewelry, except for the remarkable padung (see photo), earrings that were so heavy that they had to be anchored to a headscarf. This girl is wearing a "batu jala" textile over her shoulder, and padung-padung as ear ornaments. (P. Boomgaard, 2001). (P. Orchard, 2001).
