English: Karo-Batak man with family and the skulls of their ancestors
Nederlands: Negatief. Aan het begin van de 19e eeuw vormden de Batak een tamelijk geïsoleerde verzameling etnische groepen. Helemaal geïsoleerd waren ze natuurlijk niet, al was het alleen maar omdat ze al eeuwen lang handel dreven met buitenstaanders (vooral via Baros). Islam en Christendom hadden echter nog niet veel vat op hen gekregen. In hun kosmologie, die net als bij veel andere 'heidense volkeren', in de Archipel een sterke 'animistische' inslag had, speelden de voorouders een grote rol. De rituelen rond de doden waren bedoeld om hen tevreden te houden en te zorgen dat ze in het hiernamaals een hoge rang kregen. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
