English: A Batak priestress from Samosir, Sumatra.
Nederlands: Negatief. Wat de traditionele huizen van Sumatra onder meer gemeen hadden, was dat ze geheel van hout gemaakt waren (op de dakbedekking na). Dit ging zelfs zo ver dat er in de meeste adathuizen geen spijker te vinden was. De verbindingen tussen de grote en zware balken waren pen-en-gat- en zwaluwstaartachtige constructies. Ook kwam het voor dat balken aan elkaar vastgesjord werden met rotan, gespleten bamboe of touw. Het is duidelijk dat voor de bouw van dit soort huizen de aanwezigheid van bossen met zwaar hout een voordeel was. Men heeft wel eens geprobeerd het verschil in huistypes tussen Java en Sumatra te verklaren door te wijzen op Java's vroege ontbossing. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
