Nederlands: Negatief. Er bestaat een groep palmen, op Java en elders, die zowel suiker als vezels leveren. Dit zijn de arèn-, de gebang- en de lontarpalm. De vezel van de arènpalm werd gebruikt als dakbedekking van de eenvoudiger huizen van de inheemse bevolking, maar ook als vezel voor de productie van touw. Het agelgaren van de gebangpalm werd onder meer gebruikt voor het maken van zakken en netten. Ook de wijdverbreide klapper of kokospalm produceerde vezels, afkomstig van de bast van de noten, maar volgens de Europeanen die rond 1900 de kleine nijverheid probeerden te stimuleren, werd daar door de bevolking te weinig gebruik van gemaakt.
