Nederlands: Negatief. Zoals het grote, dunbevolkte Halmahera werd overschaduwd door de eilandjes Ternate en Tidore, zo stonden de reuzen Boeroe en Ceram in de schaduw van Ambon. Waar Halmahera in 1920 nog 4 inwoners per vierkante kilometer telde, was dat voor Boeroe slechts anderhalf. De bevolking was toen nog grotendeels 'heiden', de tweede groep werd door de islamieten gevormd, terwijl de groep christenen de kleinste was. Er werd kajoepoetih-olie op het eiland gestookt voor de handel. Verder leefde de bevolking van de jacht, het zoeken van sago, de teelt van wortels en knollen en de verbouw van rijst en gierst op ladangs. De 'regent' op de foto heeft een stok in zijn hand met een witte (ivoren?) knop, waarop het wapen van het gouvernement staat. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
