| Description |
Nederlands: Foto. Medan betekent hetzelfde als alun-alun: veld, terrein, vlakte, doorgaans een grote vierkante open vlakte in het centrum van een dorp of stad. Veel meer dan een lege vlakte was er rond 1865 op de plaats van de huidige stad ook niet te vinden. In 1863 kwam echter de tabaksplanter Nienhuys naar Deli, waar hij onder de indruk was van de lokaal geproduceerde kleinschalige tabak. Dat was het begin van de grootschalige tabakscultuur in de regio, waarbij vooral de gronden rond Medan zeer geschikt bleken. In 1879 werd er te Medan een Assistent-Resident gevestigd en in 1887 werd het de hoofdplaats van het Gouvernement Sumatra's Oostkust, het Sumatraanse plantagegebied (het Cultuurgebied') bij uitstek.
