English: Winning of mangrove bark and charcoal near Idi, Aceh, North-Sumatra.
Nederlands: Stereonegatief. Bakau is de Indonesische benaming van Rhizophora soorten voorkomend als mangrove vegetatie in vloedbossen. Gebruikt als brandhout en looibast.
Sumatra had aan het einde van de koloniale periode nog een bebossingsgraad van 61%. De inheemse bevolking had natuurlijk hout nodig voor de bouw van huizen, waaronder de adathuizen. Daarnaast werd er veel bos gekapt voor de zogeheten zwerflandbouw. Tenslotte werd er hout gekapt als brandhout, waarbij al dan niet eerst het hout tot houtskool werd verwerkt. Dit alles gebeurde op kleine schaal. In de 19e eeuw begon dit te veranderen, waarbij Riouw voorop liep. Eerst gold het vooral de productie van gambir die geheel in handen van Chinezen was en waarbij erg veel brandhout nodig was. Na ongeveer 1850 kwamen de, eveneens Chinese, panglongs van de grond, houtkapondernemingen voor de export, vooral naar Singapore en China. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
