Title
COIN
Description
English: An incomplete copper-alloy finger ring key, or 'ring-key', of Roman date, c.AD 200 - 410.

The finger ring comprises a circular hoop, of which approximately half is now lost to worn breaks, and an integral projecting bezel in the form of a key.

The hoop has a rectangular section widening at the mid-point from which the bezel projects to one side. The bezel comprises a hollow tubular stem which projects at right angle from the edge of the hoop with a flat sub-rectangular bit extending to one side. A single deep rectangular ward is present to the upper end of the bit and a series of five clefts and four wards is present on the outer edge.

The metal has a mid-green patina and is worn. The hoop of the finger ring is 20.57mm in diameter, it is 21.13mm long and 16.66mm wide. It weighs 6.6g.

Similar examples are illustrated in Crummy (1983: nos. 2165, 2169), as well as on the PAS database; LIN-62B3A4, DOR-8FF913, LANCUM-50C0B8, and is of Guiraud Type 5. Keys of this type are associated with small boxes or caskets of personal possessions rather than larger objects such as doors or cupboards, and are dated by Crummy (1983: p. 84) to the 3rd-4th centuries AD.
