Title
COIN
Description
English: A contemporary copy of a copper-alloy Roman sestertius of Antoninus Pius (AD 138-161), dating to the period c.AD 145-161 (Reece period 7). HIARITAS, S C reverse depicting a standing figure left, possibly Hilaritas, Concordia (or even the emperor?), holding patera in right hand.

This is a contemporary copy of a sestertius of Antoninus Pius. It combined an obverse from his COS IIII issues (c.AD 145-161), with a reverse type that has a blundered Hilaritas legend, which only appears in earlier issues of his coinage (e.g. RIC III, no. 606). However, the figure is not correct for Hilaritas, since she should be depicted holding palm and cornucopiae. It is unclear whether the standing figure is intended to be Concordia, Fortuna, or similar.

Measurements: 30.14mm in diameter and 21.18g in weight.
