Title
CLOTH SEAL
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper-alloy rotary locking key dating to the medieval period, c. 1100 to 1500.

Description The key has a straight stem with a drilled circular hollow cross-section, formed by a rolled stem. The bit is complicated and welded on in two sections the back section of the bit has a cleft at the base and various sunken troughts to fit the lock. The forward bit has clefts at its base with a rectangular ward forard with similar sunken troughs along its length on both sides. The stem is snaped prior to the bow, the breaks are heavily worn with indications that the stem is rolled. It i s heavily worn and slightly pitted with a light turquoise patination

Measurements: 68.28mm long, 24.74mm wide, 10.36mm thick and 41.76g in weight

Discussion: This is a relatively common key type originally classified by Ward Perkins (1940, 140) as london type III distringuised by rolled stems and welded bits. Unfortuanetly these keys have a long chronological use and fine dating is usually provided by the shape of the bow.
