Summary[edit]

Description
English: This diagram represents the diagnostic algorithm which is implemented when diagnosing hookworm infections (as recommended by the CDC of the United States Federal Government). Usually the first sign of infection is itching, and a rash, i.e. at the site where skin touched the contaminated soil or sand, occurring when the larvae penetrate the skin. In cases of heavy infection, or when malnutrition is coincidental, an infected individual may experience a puritic rash, fatigue, nausea, epigastric pain, bloating, cramping, flatus and diarrhea. Long term infections when large numbers of hookworm are present, or when infection is accompanied by malnutrition, can lead to anemia. enervation and weight loss.

This biology image could be re-created using vector graphics as an SVG file. This has several advantages; see Commons:Media for cleanup for more information. If an SVG form of this image is available, please upload it and afterwards replace this template with {{vector version available|new image name}}.

It is recommended to name the SVG file “CDC Hookworm Treatment Protocol(5245).svg”—then the template Vector version available (or Vva) does not need the new image name parameter.

This illustration of the algorithm used to diagnose and determine what treatment, if any, to use in cases of hookworm infection is offered without copyright restrictions by the CDC. The original is named 5245.tif and can be found by using the Public Health Image Library search feature. Enter the search term "hookworm" to return this image. All that they request is that the CDC get credit for the image whenever it is used.
