Summary[edit]
DescriptionCARRETTO SICILIANO (in siciliano carrettu).jpg |
English: The Sicilian cart is certainly among the elements that connote Sicilian identity; it is a means of transport that combines the functionality of transport with an almost encyclopaedic transmission of knowledge; in fact, in the 19th century it represented a veritable book in which historical-literary, epic-chivalric and religious episodes were depicted from time to time.
Over the years, the Sicilian cart, has taken on an emblematic folkloric value that is disseminated by tourist publications, survivals of a vanished world, spreading superficial information. One has to go back to the origins of the cart, to the means of transport that preceded it, to study the evolution of construction techniques starting with the 'carruzzuni ri voi', the sled or wheeled carts with a central bar, pulled by a pair of oxen, eventually replaced by the two-stayed one pulled by a single animal. In the 19th century, the greatly improved road conditions led to a structural refinement and evolution according to what was being transported. Among the elements that differentiate the chariot by area of origin are the representations the repertoire initially drew from the ornamental depictions of aristocratic means of transport, which were also enriched by different schools: chariot decorators, votive tablet painters and glass painters. Themes depicted: 1) Devotional - biblical - hagiographic, 2) Historical - chivalric 3) Legendary - fairytale, 4) Musical (lyrics), 5) Realistic - hunting - veristic. Variations in styles and colours in different parts of the island, emphasise, for example, the presence of yellows and reds with phytomorphic decorations in western Sicily. Plums and blues with anthropomorphic decorations in eastern Sicily. Chariot painting is affirmed because it fulfils several functions: protective of the wood, magical-religious anthropic to ward off evil and the negative, advertising for chariots that have a commercial function, to attract buyers, and a status symbol to demonstrate the owner's wealth. Painting fulfils a narrative character by adopting the repertoire of the hegemonic culture taken from literary or historical sources reshaped and elaborated according to personal codes accepted by the community. The art of the Sicilian cart towards Unesco heritage. In 2021, the application for inclusion in the Register of Sicily's Intangible Heritage (Reis) was accepted, submitted by the Regional Museum of Palazzo d'Aumale in Terrasini, which houses the most important public collection of Sicilian carts.
